artist statement

horizon line. sought sanctuary. recorded memory, loss. objects rise, fragment. dissolve.

My personal work tends to be clustered around a central theme or themes. They may be conscious or unconscious ones. Lurking somewhere below the surface or just above it. Although I never studied painting formally, I have always loved the physicality of it. The flow of it. It has always felt very natural to me even when I am in battle with a particularly obstinate piece. I like to allow those scars to show, to imbed the act of making in a visible way. I am framing “painting” loosely as often the palette incorporates cut paper, photographs and drawing.

One of the peculiarities of the way I work is inspired by my absolute wonder at seeing talented musicians playing together. The call and response, just allowing that experience to take them someplace new. As an outsider to that world, it just seems like magic to me.

My internalization of that experience is working simultaneously on multiple works at the same time. I often have 3 pieces in various states in front of me when I begin a new one. If I feel I am getting stuck, I will switch one out, and it will “talk” to the piece under way to inform where it goes next.  In my professional work running the consultancy, I have to spend a lot of time conceptualizing and verbalizing the visual. In my personal work, part of the joy of it… is not doing that. A sizable part of our brain does not use language, and I love seeing how that nonverbal part gets to play out ideas on its own. I can use my word head later to try and give, or perhaps impose, additional context.
